In Crimea, a drug addict stole 13 medals from a WWII veteran

Police officers detained a man in Crimea who is suspected of stealing 13 awards of a veteran of the Great Patriotic War, including two orders, medals “For military merit” and “For the capture of Berlin.” This was reported by TASS with reference to the official representative of the Russian Interior Ministry Irina Volk.

According to her, a local resident applied to the Russian Interior Ministry for the Simferopol region with a statement about the disappearance of the orders and medals of his veteran father from the house. Among them are the Orders of the Patriotic War and the Red Star, the medals “For Military Merit” and “For the Capture of Berlin”. “The investigation established that the attacker entered the premises by breaking the front door. He stole 13 family heirlooms, as well as video equipment and personal belongings of the owner,” she said.

A criminal case has been initiated under Part 3 of Art. 158 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Theft”). The sanction of the article provides, among other things, imprisonment for up to six years.

“As a result of operational-search activities, the police located and detained the suspect. During a search at his address, eight stolen medals were seized. Five more awards were found by police in an antique shop. In the near future, they will be returned to the veteran’s family, ”added the representative of the department.

In a video provided to TASS by the press center of the Russian Interior Ministry, the detainee said that he stole wheels, a TV set and military medals, some of which he handed over to a pawnshop. According to him, he committed the theft to purchase drugs.
