Often, symptoms of predisposition to cancer can be noticed already in the first year of life. Pediatrician and neuro-oncologist Enge Valiakhmetova explained whether it is possible to understand by some signs that you or your child has a high risk of developing cancer from birth.
According to Dr. Peter, according to the expert, cancer cannot be inherited in the same way as eye color, blood type or genetic diseases like hemophilia. However, genetics still has a certain influence on the risk of cancer. For example, in the “legacy” you can get genetic features that contribute to the development of cancer.
So, a person can be born with a mutation in one of the genes that normally protects us from cancer. This mutation is present in all cells of the body. Typically, these genetic changes interfere with the growth of tumors, leading to an increased risk of developing cancer. Sometimes the tumor predisposition syndrome is passed from parent to child. In other cases, it occurs for the first time in a baby. It is important to understand that the presence of a gene mutation does not necessarily provoke cancer, it is only a marker of increased risk.
Criteria for suspecting cancer predisposition syndrome:
1. Family pedigree: cancer in the patient’s parents diagnosed before the age of 45, or a history of cancer in at least two relatives (grandparents, siblings) that occurred before the same age.
2. Closely related marriage of the patient’s parents.
3. Type of tumor in a child, typical for adults.
4. Rare types of tumors, synchronous and metachronous, bilateral.
The doctor also highlights other signs of the presence of a tumor: constant weakness and fatigue without objective reasons; excessive pallor of the skin of the face and body; the formation on the baby’s body of seals, swelling in the absence of injuries; chaotic increase in temperature; the appearance of bruises even in the case of minor blows; regular pain in the same place; headaches accompanied by vomiting; unexpected causeless deterioration of vision; rapid weight loss with sufficient diet and a regular eating schedule.
