The European Commission proposed to allocate 500 million euros from the budget to increase the production of ammunition as part of support for Ukraine, according to the EC website.
European Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton called the proposal “unprecedented” and emphasized that it is aimed at directly supporting the build-up of the EU’s defense industry, both in order to support Ukraine and for its own security,” TASS reports.
According to Breton, the EC expects to increase the production of ammunition for Ukraine to 1 million ammunition per year. It is planned to achieve this goal within a year. “There are factories. 11 EU countries can already start accelerated production of shells [натовского калибра] 155 mm and two EU countries – shells [„советского“ калибра] 152 mm,” said the European Commissioner.
Now the proposal of the European Commission should be discussed by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union.
In April, the European Council approved the allocation of 1 billion euros from the European Peace Fund to provide Ukraine with ammunition until May 31. Thus, the total contribution of the EU to Ukraine within the framework of this fund reached 4.6 billion euros.
