Wooden cars and dances in traditional neighborhoods for Quito festivals still do not have permits

These activities were suspended since the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic.

The traditional wooden car race, in the south of Quito, runs the risk of not being carried out. As reported at the press conference of the Quito 2021 party program, still they do not have the permits to carry it out.

From this Sunday, November 21, activities began to celebrate the 487 years of the founding of Quito.

Victor Hugo Quishpe, coordinator of these races, pointed out that the authorities requirements change for the realization of this event every year. In addition, he pointed out that economic aid is increasingly scarce.

According to the organizer, there is no profit in this activity, but it means the joy of sharing the tradition with its neighbors, as it has been doing for more than 20 years in the avenues. Michelena, Martha Bucaram and Manuela Cañizares. “Every year the procedures in the Municipality are more difficult,” he said.

The Secretary of Culture of the Municipality of Quito, Juan Martin Cueva, mentioned in the first instance that the Municipality will be in charge of keeping the tradition alive organizing a wooden car race, however, he did not confirm the date.

According to Cueva, they spoke with the organizers of the race that was taking place in San Juan, in the center of the capital, and they they would have stated that they will suspend for the second consecutive year the race.

He also stressed the Difficulty controlling capacity in races that were held before. “There were about 30,000 people who were approaching the race, and that is absolutely impossible to control,” he emphasized.

This newspaper agreed to a request sent on November 10, 2021 to the Secretary of Security, Daniela Valarezo, for the realization of three wooden car races, scheduled for December 4, 5 and 6.

To this, the municipal agency would have responded that they have until this Wednesday 24 to present all the corresponding permits, as well as confirming certain elements, such as fencing, contracting private security and approval of other institutions.

Víctor Hugo Quishpe criticized the amount of requirements, in addition to the cost that will mean the fulfillment of all the requirements. He confirmed that he will do his best, but it is still uncertain whether they will make the races or not.

Popular dances

The popular dances known as the “Poloniazo, Machalazo and Chavezaso” (by the name of the street in which they are carried out) have not been presented to the authorities either, so they do not have authorization to carry them out.

Daniela Valarezo said that no request has arrived at her office and that, if they do, will be evaluated due to the need to establish capacity issues. (I)
