The UN stated that $1.5 billion should be allocated for the humanitarian needs of Sudan this year, TASS reports with reference to the Sky News-Arabia TV channel.
“We need $1.5 billion to meet the humanitarian needs of Sudan this year,” the world organization said.
The UN reported that to date “only 14% of the amount needed to implement the humanitarian aid program for Sudan this year has been secured.”
The situation in Sudan has escalated due to disagreements between army commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who also leads the Sovereign Council, and the head of the rapid reaction forces (special forces), Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo (Hamidti), who is his deputy in this body. The main contradictions between the two military structures are related to the question of the timing and methods of forming a unified Sudanese Armed Forces, as well as who should become the commander-in-chief of the army: a professional military man, for which al-Burhan stands, or an elected civilian president, as Dagalo insists. On April 15, clashes began between these two structures near the military base in the city of Merov, as well as in the capital, Khartoum. Hundreds of people have died since the fighting began, according to the country’s health ministry.
