Within a year and a half, Belarusian specialists will determine the site for the republican storage facility for radioactive waste. Olga Lugovskaya, head of the Department for Nuclear and Radiation Safety (Gosatomnadzor) of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Belarus, said this in an interview with the STV channel.
She stressed that public hearings would be held regarding the issue of the location of the radioactive waste storage facility.
Places near the Belarusian nuclear power plant, or zones of radioactive contamination, including the Polessky radiation-ecological reserve, can be considered as possible locations for the point.
In early April, Dmitry Pavlov, head of the radioactive waste management department of Gosatomnadzor, announced that approaches and criteria for choosing a site for placing a radioactive waste storage facility were being developed. It is assumed that experts will identify three alternative sites, from which the most optimal option from the point of view of safety will then be selected.
