We have been experiencing a situation of terror in the country for several months. Insecurity is getting stronger every day, companies are closing their businesses, investors are not realizing their intentions to settle in the country, we all wonder if it is solely because of the Government or are there externalities that prevent the implementation of the political plan?
Undoubtedly, the danger of the removal of the President of the Republic by the National Assembly due to the impeachment process against him is an alarm for the international community, but above all for domestic and foreign investors.
At the moment, the government has a big crossroads on its hands, on the one hand, accepting that the mafias rule the streets and that their security is out of control, and on the other hand, wanting to transparently fight this mafia and correct it. But what could we call a proper and transparent fight against security? It could be argued that the Government could activate new security plans and concurrent controls, empower the Armed Forces to occupy the streets and manage the private sector for private security companies to support, but is that enough? No, insecurity is the tip of the iceberg, in Ecuador we are going through a time of fighting between mafias for territorial control, unemployment, hunger, lack of investment, etc.
Solving security must be the priority of the Government, but we must also understand that it is not only the fact that we feel insecure as citizens and businessmen, but also to understand the opportunities that the state is losing at this moment by focusing on political instability and lack of investment due to increased country risk.
The fight for Ecuador to be on top again belongs to all Ecuadorians, not just those in power.
A few months ago, Ecuador had the opportunity to change its image at the international level and attract the largest domestic and international investments ever seen, since with the measures proposed to reactivate the economy, such as free zones, the country entered the major league for investors. Ecuador has many advantages to attract investors, but the lack of a strong and clear public policy still casts doubt on the country’s ability to offer legal certainty and political stability.
What do we need as a country to be able to fight against so much instability? We need political stability, clear public policies that allow domestic and foreign investors long-term predictability of investment, a security plan that includes prison and street control, we need jobs and opportunities for economic growth.
The fight for Ecuador to be on top again belongs to all Ecuadorians, not just those in power. From the moment we elect our leaders to the demands that they comply with their policy proposals, because with clear public policies and structured plans we can fight insecurity as well as attract investment to create economic and political stability.
