You buy a smartphone, you get a hundred-kilogram bag. The expert explains what should be inside

– To produce a new phone, you need about 100 kg of various materials and about 100 kg of greenhouse gas emissions – this is how Olga Z³otnicka, who is responsible for equipment procurement at Orange, talks about the impact of smartphones on the environment in the latest episode of the TechnoTerapia podcast.

On April 22, we celebrated International Earth Day again. Therefore, in the next episode of the TechnoTerapia podcast, we want to draw even more attention to the problem of polluting our planet. We have already talked about how companies can realistically strive for climate neutrality and reducing the carbon footprint. The next episode addresses the issue of recycling waste and extending the life of electronics. Sometimes it is worth looking at the equipment around us as a source of valuable raw materials, and not as waste that can be thrown into the trash.

Reducing environmental impact? It can be counted in tons

How to do it? In the latest episode of TechnoTerapia, she told about it Olga Zlotnicka. He is responsible for Orange, a company that does a lot to reduce its environmental impact, including purchasing devices that then go to our homes. And for making the equipment as energy-intensive as possible, as environmentally friendly as possible, so that it can be repaired and recycled.

– Together with my team, we run many initiatives and projects as part of environmentally friendly activities – explained the host of the broadcast. And she explained what exactly Orange does to make the use of its services ecological. One of the most important issues is the ability to pick up parcels at a parcel machine. – As you probably know, it generates less CO2 than courier delivery – said Olga Złotnicka. The reduction of CO2 emissions is also brought about by another activity of Orange – the popularization of e-contracts, which also saves paper.

We have modified the packaging process for courier shipments, eliminating plastic from it. Thanks to this, we have reduced the CO2 emissions that were needed to wrap the packaging. And imagine if we cut plastic production by four tons a year

operator’s representative said.

Check your smartphone. He has an impact on the environment

Olga Złotnicka also explained that the operator’s customers can make more informed decisions about the choice of equipment. All thanks to an agreement concluded by several of the largest European telecommunications service providers. – Orange, Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, Telefonika and Telia decided together with smartphone manufacturers to enable customers to check how the production of a given phone affects the environment and climate – said the expert. – For each device, we can find information on how durable the device is, how easy it is to repair, how resources were used in its production, how much or how little greenhouse gases are emitted – she added.

To produce a new phone, about 100 kg of various materials and about 100 kg of greenhouse gas emissions are needed

– emphasized Olga Złotnicka. She also encouraged Poles to be more willing to say goodbye to devices they no longer need.

If we took all telephones of Polish women and men out of the drawers, I think that the potential for creating new devices would be very large, because our research shows that people are also very reluctant to hand over telephones for such renewal, for processing.

Set-top box and router may be more durable. Orange repairs them on a massive scale

Another topic raised in TechnoTerapia was the issue of equipment that is often constantly connected to the power supply, such as a decoder or modem. – Orange Polska cares very much about the durability of these devices. They are our property and we rather design them with such an intention and in such a way that they serve us as long as possible – assured Olga Złotnicka. In her opinion, it is in the interest of manufacturers that such devices are durable and not only suitable for replacement in the event of an often minor fault.

I have been a big fan of all these right to repair movements for years. When customers return devices to us, approximately 90 percent of them are returned to us. are renewed by us. The rest requires regulatory changes, technological changes

– stated the representative of Orange.

Environmental impact depends on personal decisions

Olga Złotnicka also stated that specific actions taken by us every day have a real impact on the condition of the environment. – Eco-habits alone, i.e. such a change in our behavior, are able to immediately reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent. she said.

That is why, according to the host of the podcast, building awareness and educating in this area is so important. The broadcasters also emphasized that it is very important for each of us to take some specific actions. Even by choosing a smartphone, telephone operator or Internet service provider, we can somehow contribute to improving the environment.
