Flaxseed oil is made from ground and pressed flaxseeds, traditionally used as a laxative and for wound healing. It also contains many active compounds believed to be beneficial, including: alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid; linoleic acid (LA), an omega-6 fatty acid; oleic acid, omega-9 fatty acid; lignans, glycosides and peptides.
“The benefits of flaxseed oil include reducing inflammation, preventing heart disease, and improving digestion,” nutritionist Igor Strokov was quoted as saying by MedikForum.
Because flaxseed oil contains omega-3 fatty acids, it is believed to reduce inflammation.
“One analysis of several human studies found that flaxseed contains compounds beneficial in lowering C-reactive protein (a marker of inflammation) in some study participants who were obese,” the expert explained.
The analysis shows that flaxseed oil can affect people differently, so more research is needed to determine its effect on inflammation in the general population.
“Flaxseed oil has also been shown to reduce two inflammatory markers called interleukin-6 (IL-6) and malondialdehyde (MDA),” the expert concluded.
