How to find a temporary job offer at Christmas time

The busiest time of year can become a job opportunity.

Near the end of the year, with the appearance of holidays and customer promotions, such as Black Friday and Christmas, some businesses are looking for new employees due to demand. A good part of these work spaces are related to customer service in stores and restaurants, a call center, logistics for product packaging and shipments, advice and promotions, among others.

According to National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC), the adequate employment rate as of September 2020 is 30.8%, and in September 2021 it is 33.5%. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate as of September 2020 is 6.2%, and in September 2021 it is 4.9%.

The time becomes an opportunity to generate extra income or, if you are unemployed, obtain a temporary job while a full-time offer arises.

Viviana Rodríguez, director of Business Solutions at Adecco Ecuador, a leading company in human resources solutions, explains that at the workplace level the pandemic changed the dynamics of talent selection and retention, so now companies value skills more than knowledge. “Currently it is necessary to develop certain skills and competencies, such as technological ones, adaptation to change, working for results, self-leadership, among others,” he says.

Sebastián Lima, Director of Quality and Service at Adecco Ecuador, provides a series of recommendations that will allow us to meet the objective of finding a job during this period of the year.

  • Identify the sectors with the highest volume of contracts. Before starting, it is recommended to first do market analysis and identify the sectors in which there is greater demand.
  • Consider the availability of time. Being temporary jobs due to high demand season, most jobs require staff to work weekends, so you must have availability.
  • Update the resume. To find a temporary job at Christmas time it is necessary to edit the resume and focus it towards this goal.
  • Use job portals. Currently, there are countless pages to find work that can help to discover vacancies according to each professional profile.
  • Lean on the network of contacts. A good way to get a job, in general, is to rely on contacts. (I)
