Russia, in the event of “imminent aggression” against it, reserves the right to ensure national security by all available means, Vladimir Yermakov, director of the department for nonproliferation and arms control of the Russian Foreign Ministry, said in an interview with TASS.
Thus, he answered a question related to the new Concept of Russia’s foreign policy, approved by the decree of President Vladimir Putin. The document says that the country can use the armed forces to repel and prevent an armed attack on itself or its allies. The diplomat was asked what types of weapons, according to this provision of the concept, can be used to prevent an attack.
“When resolving interstate contradictions and conflicts, Russia, as before, will primarily strive to resolve them by peaceful means – through diplomacy and negotiations. However, if non-military means have been exhausted and aggression against us is inevitable, then we reserve the right to ensure national security with all available means,” Yermakov said.
At the same time, he added that Russia “considers it necessary to stabilize relations between nuclear powers and does not renounce new security treaties with the West in the future.”
Recall that after the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine, relations between Russia and the West deteriorated sharply. Moscow reproaches the United States and its allies for assisting the “Ukrainian regime”, while the West accuses Russia of violating international law and unleashing hostilities on the territory of an independent state.
