Berlin police have arrested at least 200 people in connection with protests by activists from the Letzte Generation environmental movement in the German capital. It is reported by TASS.
Through their actions, participants seek to draw attention to the problem of global warming.
“At the moment, about 200 people have been arrested in 35 places. The figures are not yet final, ”the Ministry of the Interior, Digitalization and Sports in the government of the state of Berlin quotes the words of the head of the department, Iris Spranger. At the same time, she expressed her gratitude to the 500 emergency workers who contained or prevented the Last Generation protests.
Since Monday morning, environmental activists have held more than 20 actions in Berlin to draw attention to the problem of climate change. The actions led to a significant restriction of traffic in the city. Seven people glued themselves to the asphalt in the Ernst Reiter Square in the morning, five more on Hardenberg Strasse in the Charlottenburg district. Later, similar actions were organized on other streets, including at the Victory Column in the center of Berlin, where a huge traffic jam eventually formed. Some actions have resulted in several ambulances getting stuck in traffic.
Earlier, Letzte Generation announced that it intends to constantly hold its actions in Berlin in the coming days, protesting against the allegedly insufficient efforts of the authorities to combat global warming. On Monday, activists planned to mobilize up to 800 supporters and completely paralyze traffic in the German capital. Letzte Generation is calling for a stronger fight against climate change, such as speed limits on motorways and lower fares on public transport. Representatives of the movement have repeatedly stressed that they will continue their actions until the German authorities find an optimal solution.
The actions of the members of the Letzte Generation have become more and more radical in recent months. On October 31, 2022, two environmental activists climbed onto signs above the busy A100 autobahn in Berlin, forcing the police to block traffic. Also, because of the actions of the radicals, the airports of Berlin and Munich suspended their work, and they attacked works of art in museums. In December, representatives of the movement cut down the top of a Christmas tree near the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, in February they felled a tree in front of the chancellor’s office.
