A rifle, two submachine guns, a revolver and pistols were seized during the capture of five people in operations carried out in the city of Esmeraldas, between the recent weekend and Monday the 8th.
Yesterday afternoon, two citizens were apprehended by Armed Forces personnel on 31 de Mayo and Gustavo Becerra streets, near the Folke Anderson stadium, with a revolver and seven 38mm caliber cartridges.
Meanwhile, police officers found three high-caliber weapons after searching a home in the Santa Martha neighborhood, on the banks of the Esmeraldas River. In that place, they captured in flagrante delicto a citizen presumed to be the author of an assassination attempt.

In another capture, three citizens, alleged perpetrators of the crimes of attempted murder and murder, were found with firearms inside a vehicle. The criminal attack took place in the El Embudo neighborhood, north of the city, and left two injured. The suspects were captured on Isla Piedad after a police chase.
During the state of exception between last April and June, 146 firearms, 558 bladed weapons and 1,210 ammunition were retained in the green province. While from the 1st to the 7th of this month, 19 firearms, 60 unpercussed cartridges and 58 bladed weapons were seized, reported the Subzone 8 Police.
In recent days, a subject was also arrested with a toy rifle-type weapon while trying to assault some people at night in a sector of the Esmeraldas River, police officers revealed.
What worries the authorities is the provision of firearms to criminals and organizations outside the law to commit crimes. One of these weapons, presumably reported as one of those stolen from the Guayaquil Model Barracks, was found in the capture of suspects in the attempted assassination of the vice mayor of Atacames, in July of this year.

Very little is known about the legal proceedings against people for the alleged crime of trafficking or possession of firearms in the Esmeraldas Prosecutor’s Office and Criminal Courts. The Prosecutor’s Office informed of the judicial order of preventive detention for Leonardo T., Carlos P., Milton G., Paúl L. and Juan C., for their alleged participation in the crime of illicit firearms trafficking.
The defendants were arrested in flagrante delicto at midnight on Wednesday, May 18, when the National Police carried out preventive patrols. The agents heard detonations of firearms that the now accused were carrying out on Pedro Vicente Maldonado street (Malecón and Pichincha). (YO)
