The State Border Service of Azerbaijan has announced the installation of a checkpoint at the beginning of the Lachin-Khankendi road on the border with Armenia. As explained in the service, this will prevent the transfer of “manpower, ammunition” and military equipment from Armenia.
The state border service clarified that Baku was forced to establish a checkpoint “contrary to the tripartite statement of November 10, 2020” in order to stop the violations of the Armenian side.
In turn, the Security Council of Nagorno-Karabakh issued a statement in which it declared the blockade of the Lachin corridor and the establishment of a checkpoint unacceptable. They stressed that the inhabitants of the unrecognized republic became “hostages in the hands of Azerbaijan.”
The Council called on Moscow to assist in lifting the blockade and preventing the installation of a checkpoint.
Armenia made the same call. Yerevan called on the Russian side to remove the blockade of the Lachin corridor and ensure the withdrawal of Azerbaijani forces from there.
It should be noted that the trilateral statement of 2020, signed by Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia, establishes that the Lachin corridor remains under the control of the Russian peacekeeping contingent. Azerbaijan, according to the document, must guarantee the safety of the route in both directions.
