A group of unknown people fired at the office of the ruling Justice and Development Party of Turkey (AK Parti, AKP) in Istanbul. It is reported by RBC with reference to the Daily Sabah.

As a result of the incident, no one was injured.

Police arrived at the scene and cordoned off the building, an investigation was launched into the incident. The chairman of the party in Istanbul, Osman Nuri Kabaktepe, condemned the attack. “We will seek consideration of the case in court. The biggest consolation for us is that there are no victims or injured as a result of the attack,” Kabaktepe said.

AKP vice chairman and party spokesman Omer Celik also condemned the attack, saying party members are against all kinds of provocations and attacks on Turkey’s political institution.

On April 20, an unknown person opened fire on the headquarters of the AKP in the Turkish province of Adana in the south. The suspect fired 12 shots at the building from a machine gun, the police managed to detain him. On April 6, the headquarters of the opposition Republican People’s Party of Turkey also came under fire.

The attacks come ahead of the presidential elections on 14 May. Residents of Turkey will elect not only the head of state, but also 600 members of parliament. By law, general elections in Turkey must be held before June 18, but in January, incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan allowed them to be held a month earlier. After the largest earthquake in the history of the country in early February, his headquarters offered to postpone the elections to June 18 because of the disaster, but the Turkish leader refused.
