The wife of Prince Harry, the Duchess of Sussex Meghan (Markle) will not come to the coronation of King Charles III of Great Britain due to dissatisfaction with the efforts of the royal court in the fight against racism. It is reported by TASS with reference to The Daily Telegraph.
According to the newspaper’s sources, after Markle’s interview with US TV presenter Oprah Winfrey in March 2021, the current monarch, who was then the heir to the throne and held the title of Prince of Wales, wrote a letter to the Duchess expressing regret at the fact that she had to deal with racism under communication with the royal family. In that CBS interview, the Duchess of Sussex mentioned that her husband’s relatives were concerned about the color of her unborn child’s skin. She did not say who exactly made such statements.
According to the publication, the current monarch was the only senior member of the royal family who contacted her after the scandalous interview. Sources of The Daily Telegraph stressed that in a response letter, Meghan Markle made it clear which of the representatives of the royal family made the mentioned statements. As the newspaper noted, both the Duchess of Sussex and the current monarch agreed that the corresponding remark was made without malicious intent.
According to the newspaper, Meghan Markle then thanked the heir to the throne for his letter and said that she was not going to accuse a particular representative of the royal family of racism, but only wanted to draw attention to the problem of “unconscious prejudice.” At the same time, as the newspaper added, it still considers those statements racist. A source in The Daily Telegraph in the royal environment stressed that the correspondence was held in a “warm tone”, but did not lead to a “decrease in tension” between the parties. As a result, one of the reasons for Meghan Markle’s absence from the coronation is her dissatisfaction with the reaction of the royal court to the approach to combating manifestations of racism, the newspaper pointed out.
