The Ministry of Agriculture called on the regional bodies of the agro-industrial complex to prepare for a possible ban on the import of seed material from unfriendly countries. This is reported by Kommersant, citing sources who were present at the meeting with Deputy Minister Oksana Lut.
According to the publication, at the meeting, the official said that the seeds are the “basic position” in the agro-industrial complex with the possible introduction of retaliatory sanctions by Russia, noting that the Rosselkhoznadzor has already begun to preventively prohibit supplies.
The publication indicates that up to 97% of sugar beet seeds are imported from abroad, sunflower – up to 77%, corn – up to 50%, potatoes – up to 30%.d It will be almost impossible to replace all these types of seeds with Russian products at once.
According to Andrey Sizov, the director of Sovecon, it will take up to three years to completely replace imported beet, corn and sunflower seeds. Now the rejection of them threatens to reduce the yield and quality of crops.
