A petition has been published on the Internet calling for the dismissal of the governor of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug, Natalia Komarova. According to the authors, against the backdrop of forest fires, local authorities acted “illiterately and out of time”, which led to serious damage.
The text on the Change.org portal notes that the state of emergency in the region lasted only a week, from July 22 to July 29, under the pretext that the situation had stabilized. However, “the area of fires has increased significantly during this time.” As a result, “preliminary damage from forest fires in the Urals this year amounted to almost 1.5 billion rubles,” the petition says, citing the forestry department for the Ural Federal District.
Also, the signatories of the petition recalled that Komarova, being a State Duma deputy, participated in the development of the Forest Code of the Russian Federation, “after which the forest protection services were reorganized.”
Now there are more than 50 natural fires in Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, local residents complain about the smell of burning, smoke and poor visibility on the roads. According to the latest data from the Ministry of Emergency Situations, 42 thousand hectares are covered by fire.
