Eight minors, aged between 1 and 17 years, were rescued this Friday, August 5, by Dinapen agents. A pregnant woman was detained for investigations. She would be the mother of seven of the children and grandmother of the eighth of them.

They stayed in a house under construction, without doors or windows. They slept on mattresses on the floor and didn’t even have a roof to cover themselves with.

For three months, the Police for Minors investigated the woman for the crime of human trafficking for labor exploitation, because she allegedly took her children and grandson to the center of Guayaquil every night to sell candy and ask for money at traffic lights. .

The family lived in the sector of La Ladrillera, in the northwest of Guayaquil, an area of ​​difficult access where buses do not even reach.

According to the agents, the minors went to the center at night and stayed until the wee hours of the morning in a vulnerable condition on the streets. And, although they were enrolled in a school in the sector, they attended classes very sporadically, because they were tired when they returned home late.

This case had already been addressed by the Ministry of Economic and Social Inclusion (MIES), according to Lieutenant Wladimir Ortega, from the Dinapen Anti-Trafficking Unit.

The policeman explained that the Ministry had tried to enroll the woman and her children in some program to get them out of begging, but she had not wanted to look for a job and take her children off the streets.

Instead, he rejected the social workers. In addition, she was pregnant again and kept taking her children to ask for money.

Among the minors rescued are five children and three teenagers. The defendant’s 17-year-old daughter and her one-year-old son were also rescued. An adolescent with a disability was also transferred to a foster home.

During this Friday they underwent medical check-ups to verify their health, and in the course of days they will be psychologically evaluated to rule out that they have been victims of sexual abuse in the streets.

The Police also indicated that a man lived with the woman and the minors, who was identified as the cohabitant of the detainee. He was not apprehended, but investigations continue.

This Friday, the man and his mother remained in the house. The mother-in-law of the detainee told a team from EL UNIVERSO that they would only give an interview in exchange for help.

What does the law say?

Human trafficking for labor exploitation is punishable by 13 to 16 years.

In the case of the pregnant woman, precautionary measures would be granted and she would have to be prosecuted after the birth of her baby. (YO)
