A new subspecies of the Arcturus coronavirus (XVV 1.16), which is a variant of the Omicron strain, is spreading in Russia. According to the head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova, the wave of incidence of “Arcturus” is expected at the end of May, after holidays and vacations.

“We see the risks of a further rise [заболеваемости] by the end of May. Now the vacation period will begin, then everyone will gather and this surge may be, ”TASS quotes Popova’s statement.

At the same time, experts say that despite the high contagiousness of the new subspecies, it does not cause a severe course of the disease, therefore, its discovery in Russia does not cause concern and a serious increase in the incidence should not be expected. It is noted that in addition to the already familiar symptoms, when infected with Arcturus, symptoms of conjunctivitis and fever may appear, but not in all cases.

On April 18, Rospotrebnadzor reported the first cases of infection with the Arcturus subtype of coronavirus in Russia. The agency noted that the introduction of anti-epidemic restrictive measures is not required. The next day, this variant was found in three samples from Moscow patients.

Previously, the Arcturus subspecies was widespread in India, Singapore, and cases were also recorded in the USA, Germany, and China. According to the World Health Organization, the new version has been distributed to 29 countries as of April 13.
