Russian Alexander Vinnik disappeared after arriving in Greece, RIA Novosti reports citing Vinnik’s Greek lawyer Zoya Konstantopoulou.

According to her, the situation “looks like a violent kidnapping.” The lawyer told the agency that the police department of the Athens airport “said that they did not know where Alexander Vinnik was, that he had never passed here, that they did not know his name, they did not know where he was.” Responsible dignitaries “are all hiding,” Constantopoulou added.

The lawyer emphasized that “if something like this happened, we are talking about one of the most egregious cases of violation of international legality: we are talking about the abduction and enforced disappearance of a person.” According to her, “since July 20, it has been known that Vinnik is asking for asylum and turned to the authorized authorities.”

Recall that earlier the United States withdrew an extradition request that was sent to France in 2020. According to Vinnik’s lawyer Frederic Belo, with this step, the American authorities wanted to ensure Vinnik’s return to Greece, so that from there he could be extradited to the United States.

Vinnik was detained while on vacation in Greece in the summer of 2017 at the request of the United States. Washington accused him of laundering at least $4 billion through a cryptocurrency exchange. In 2020, Vinnik was extradited to France, where he was suspected of identity theft and extortion.
