Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, in an address on the occasion of the country’s Armed Forces Day, threatened Israel with a “tough response” in case of any actions directed against Tehran.
“The enemies, especially the Zionist regime, have been warned that any action against the country [Ирана] will cause a harsh response from the armed forces and will be accompanied by the destruction of Haifa and Tel Aviv, ”RBC quotes Raisi’s statement.
In addition, the Iranian president demanded that the United States withdraw from the Middle East region and said that the Iranian army “stretches its hand” to regional states “interested in peace and security.” At the same time, he did not name specific countries, but, according to the Times of Israel, Raisi had in mind Saudi Arabia as well. In March, Tehran and Riyadh agreed to restore diplomatic relations, broken off in 2016.
As noted, Raisi’s statements were made on April 18, when Israel celebrates Holocaust Remembrance Day, as well as the morning after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech. He called the Islamic Republic “the modern equivalent of Nazi Germany” during a ceremony in memory of the victims of the Holocaust in Jerusalem, and said that Iran poses an “existential threat to the Jewish people.”
