Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said that Armenians living in the Karabakh region of the country should choose either to accept Azerbaijani citizenship or look for another place to live. He stated this in an interview with the state television channel AzTV.
“We have repeatedly stated that we will not discuss our internal affairs with any country,” Aliyev said, adding that Karabakh is “our internal affair.”
According to the President of Azerbaijan, ethnic Armenians living in the disputed territory need to make a choice. Aliyev stressed that “everything is decided on the basis of democratic processes.”
“This issue should also be decided on the basis of human rights,” he added.
Aliyev noted that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan agreed that the borders of states should be settled on the basis of the Alma-Ata Declaration of 1991.
According to Aliyev, Armenia must confirm the absence of territorial claims against Baku, stating that Nagorno-Karabakh is part of Azerbaijan.
