The Foreign Ministers of the G7 countries (Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Canada, France, Japan and the United States) at a meeting in Karuizawa in the Japanese prefecture of Nagano decided to maintain sanctions against Russia, work together to prevent their circumvention, and continue to support Ukraine. The corresponding statement was published on the website of the Japanese Foreign Ministry.
The meeting participants stressed that they intend to take measures to prevent the supply of weapons to Russia from third countries. They said that Moscow should withdraw troops and equipment from Ukraine, condemned President Vladimir Putin’s intention to deploy tactical weapons in Belarus, and called Russia’s “irresponsible nuclear rhetoric” unacceptable. Putin announced plans to deploy nuclear weapons in Minsk at the end of March, citing the UK’s promise to transfer depleted uranium shells to Ukraine.
In addition, Japanese Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi called for strengthening relations with the countries of the “Global South” (the countries of Africa, Latin America and the developing states of Asia; they did not impose sanctions against Russia). Recall that Tokyo is chairing the G7 this year.
