The human body needs certain vitamins and minerals to function to the best of its ability. Most of the nutrients we need can be obtained from food, but in some cases we may not be getting enough vitamins and minerals, exposing ourselves to potential health risks.
According to MedikForum, magnesium is an essential mineral and is required for over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body. It is found in plant foods such as legumes, dark green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and fortified cereals. And also in fish, poultry and beef.
“Chocolate cravings could mean that the body needs a boost in magnesium levels. Chocolate, especially dark chocolate, is one of the magnesium-rich foods due to its high cocoa content. The darker the chocolate, the more valuable minerals it contains,” explained nutritionist Igor Strokov.
Eating a certain amount of chocolate can help boost magnesium levels, he says.
“A large bar of dark chocolate can cover more than 70% of your daily magnesium requirement,” he added.
However, the sweet treat should be consumed in moderation because it is high in calories.
“There are healthier alternatives like pumpkin seeds, almonds, bananas, figs or spinach that can be used to cover your daily magnesium requirement,” the expert said.
