The eruption destroyed the dome of the Shiveluch volcano in Kamchatka, RBC reports.
According to Yuri Demyanchuk, an employee of the Klyuchevskaya volcano station of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a directed explosion occurred on the volcano to the southeast. “Most of the construction of the active dome is destroyed. A huge crater with a diameter of more than a kilometer was formed, ”the specialist said, adding that pyroclastic flows, that is, a mixture of ash, high-temperature volcanic gases and rock fragments, passed from the volcano at a distance of more than 20 km.
Director of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexei Ozerov said that Shiveluch will erupt for a long time. “And the ash will be in the atmosphere for a long time. But the main phase of the eruption is over,” Ozerov said.
The powerful eruption of Shiveluch began on April 11. He threw ashes to a height of 20 km, because of which a red aviation hazard code was introduced. In the village of Klyuchi, which is located approximately 50 km from the volcano, there was a heavy ashfall.
