American billionaire Elon Musk is preparing to launch an artificial intelligence startup that will compete with the creator of ChatGPT OpenAI, writes The Financial Times, citing sources.
The Tesla founder is assembling a team of artificial intelligence researchers and engineers, including British company DeepMind, the sources said. Specifically, Musk brought in former DeepMind employee Igor Babushkin and about six other engineers.
For the new project, the businessman purchased thousands of powerful GPUs from Nvidia. GPUs are the high-end chips needed to achieve Musk’s goal of building a large language model – artificial intelligence systems capable of processing huge amounts of content and creating human-like texts or realistic images, the FT explains.
In addition, Musk is in talks with a number of investors from SpaceX and Tesla to invest in a new startup. “A lot of people are investing in this and they are thrilled,” one of the sources said.
At the end of March, Musk signed an open letter from experts and representatives of the IT industry, which said that artificial intelligence systems could pose a danger to society. The authors of the letter urged all AI labs to stop training systems more powerful than GPT-4 until common security protocols are created.
