North Korea has launched the Hwaseong-18 solid-propellant intercontinental ballistic missile for the first time. It is reported by RBC with reference to the South Korean agency Yonhap.

The launch was led by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. He said that the Hwaseong-18 would increase “the country’s readiness for a counterattack nuclear strike” and allow “dramatically restructuring the composition of the strategic deterrence force,” the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reports. He “expressed satisfaction with the results of the launch.”

Two stages of the rocket fell into the sea at a distance of 10 and 335 km from the coast of North Korea, according to the KCNA. According to the country’s authorities, the launch “did not have a negative impact on the security of neighboring countries.”

The launch by North Korea of a ballistic missile of medium or long range towards the Sea of Japan on April 13 was reported by Yonhap, citing data from the Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea. Intelligence agencies of the country and the United States began to analyze the characteristics of the missile.

Washington decided that an intercontinental ballistic missile was launched during the tests. “The United States strongly condemns the DPRK for its long-range ballistic missile test,” the US National Security Council said in a statement.
