It’s no secret that sugar destroys our teeth: the more you eat chocolate, cookies, cakes and other goodies, the greater the risks. At the same time, ordinary brushing is not enough: a toothbrush, even if it is modern and expensive, is unable to completely remove food particles stuck between teeth. To do this, you need to use an irrigator and dental floss. According to Dr. Peter, dental therapist Amanda Sheehan clarified that the high amount of sugar in chocolate can cause the formation of harmful plaque, which, if left on the teeth, can lead to cavities, pulpitis and gum disease.
But here, the doctor notes, many make a typical mistake – they run to brush their teeth immediately after the next dessert.
According to the dentist, before brushing your teeth, be sure to wait about 20-30 minutes.
“If you brush your teeth after a meal that contains acids or sugars, then you will only damage the tooth enamel. Saliva does not have time to neutralize the harmful effects of substances, so aggressive brushing will only make the teeth weaker. Over time, the enamel will become thinner, and this is a direct path to the fact that you will suffer from caries and bleeding gums. And if the affected tooth is not treated in time, then everything can end with the installation of a crown or even its removal, ”explains the expert.
And one more important reminder: always go to bed with clean teeth. The fact is that during the night the microbes that remained in the pieces of food will begin to multiply many times more actively, because saliva is not produced in such quantities as during the day, there is nothing to “wash them away”. And this is also very harmful to the health of teeth and gums.
The doctor also advised drinking clean water between meals, chewing gum with xylitol, it helps in the production of saliva; snack less often drink black and green tea – these varieties of the drink contain fluoride and therefore help protect teeth and prevent tooth decay.
