Three passengers of the Mi-8 helicopter, flying on the route Srednekolymsk – Chersky in Yakutia, received chemical burns of their lower extremities. According to TASS, the East Siberian Transport Prosecutor’s Office and the Eastern Interregional Investigation Department for Transport of the Russian Investigative Committee reported that, according to preliminary data, jet fuel got on the seats.

“The Yakut transport prosecutor’s office is conducting an investigation into the fact that passengers of the Mi-8 aircraft received chemical burns. It was preliminary established that on April 11, 2023, when landing the Mi-8 aircraft, which was flying on the Srednekolymsk-Chersky route, passengers felt a sharp smell of kerosene in the cabin of the aircraft, approximately after an hour of flight, three passengers felt a burning sensation, ”the Vostochno- Siberian Transport Prosecutor’s Office.

There were 22 passengers on board the aircraft. “After arriving at their destination, three passengers sought medical help at the hospital, where during the examination they were found to have chemical burns on their lower extremities. The preliminary reason for the incident is the ingress of jet fuel onto the seats as a result of a temperature difference and the release of fuel through the drainage, ”the Eastern Interregional Investigation Department for Transport of the Russian Investigative Committee reported. The Yakut Investigation Department for the transport of the Eastern MSUT of the IC of Russia is conducting a pre-investigation check under Part 1 of Art. 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Provision of services that do not meet the requirements of the safety of life or health of consumers”).

According to Polar Airlines, the air carrier assumes obligations to compensate for moral and material damage to passengers of the Srednekolymsk-Chersky flight. Assistance is also provided to the commission of the territorial administration of the Federal Air Transport Agency, which is conducting an inspection on this fact.

“In order to prevent leakage of aviation fuel from the drainage system on Mi-8T/MTV aircraft, Polar Airlines has taken corrective measures. According to preliminary data, the leakage of aviation fuel occurred due to the effect of thermal expansion due to a significant diurnal difference in ambient temperature when the tanks were fully refueled. In turn, the full refueling of Mi-8T/MTV helicopters is carried out in order to prevent the formation of condensate in the fuel system,” the airline’s telegram channel reported.
