Coastline dwellers around the world are preparing for the “arrival” of a giant swarm of Sargassum seaweed. According to Gismeteo, the latest reports say it could be the largest on record.

Said algae usually grow in the Sargasso Sea, hence the name “sargassum”. There they serve as a valuable environment for the life of marine life. However, climate change and environmental pollution have caused Sargassum to superbloom in recent years.

Florida has been suffering from this phenomenon for many years. Sometimes so many algae wash up on the shore that they cover the surroundings like huge carpets. It seems that in 2023 there will be even more of them.

The University of South Florida noted that the amount of sargassum from West Africa to the Gulf of Mexico was a record, reaching approximately 13 million tons.

Sargassum is a genus of brown macroalgae found in temperate and tropical oceans around the world. They form gigantic clusters like floating islands that stretch for miles. Many species of birds, fish, sea turtles and crustaceans find refuge in them. At the same time, the clusters spread a sharp putrefactive odor around them.
