Petersburg specialists presented a project for the restoration of the Triumphal Arch of Palmyra in Syria. Work on it will begin in August-September 2023. The project was approved at a meeting of three academic councils – the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Hermitage and the Moscow Institute of Architecture.
“A large team of specialists, leading architectural bureaus, representatives of the International Scientific Committee for Palmyra, ICOMOS and the Union of Restorers of St. Petersburg, representatives of St. Petersburg companies worked on the project,” said the Governor of St. Petersburg Alexander Beglov.
A digital 3D model of the entire territory of Palmyra with an area of 21 square kilometers has been created. Petersburg archaeologists, in cooperation with Syrian colleagues, excavated the entire territory of the arch. All stages of restoration were worked out in the smallest detail, taking into account the requirements of UNESCO.
The restoration is planned to be completed within three years, said Natalia Solovieva, head of the project, director of the Center for Rescue Archeology of the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences, deputy director of the Institute for the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences. According to her, the project will be presented in Syria on May 17. Experts hope that they will be able to start restoration in August-September, after coordination with UNESCO.
