Washington continues to seek consular access from Russia to the detained correspondent of The Wall Street Journal, Evan Gershkovich. According to Interfax, this was stated by Deputy State Department Vedant Patel.
“We are still trying to achieve consular access … We have brought to the attention of the Russian authorities the need to provide such access as soon as possible,” he said at a briefing.
He noted that “the United States continues to work through appropriate channels” on this issue.
Earlier, the Center for Public Relations (CSP) of the FSB of the Russian Federation reported the detention of Gershkovich, a US citizen born in 1991. As explained in the FSB, “while trying to obtain secret information, an American was detained in Yekaterinburg.”
On March 30, the Lefortovo Court of Moscow, at the request of the investigation, placed under arrest Gershkovich, who was detained in a case of espionage. According to the FSB, the defendant, “acting on the instructions of the American side, collected information constituting a state secret about the activities of one of the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex.”
