Last year, Russia opened 893 criminal cases against migrants under articles such as murder or intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm resulting in the death of the victim. According to Interfax, the head of the Investigative Committee Alexander Bastrykin said that this is five times more than in 2021.

The total number of cases on the fact of crimes committed by foreigners has almost tripled, to 4.2 thousand, said Bastrykin. Among illegal migrants, “extremist sentiments are spreading”, the number of cases of crimes against sexual integrity has increased, as well as cases of attacks on security forces.

Speaking of mass brawls, Bastrykin said that in most cases “immigrants from the Central Asian countries of the CIS” take part in them. “Literally last week, the organizer of such mass brawls and five of their participants were detained in the capital,” he said. The UK reported this detention on 5 April; according to the department, the participants in the fight recorded it on video in order to put it online, “demonstrating <…> clear disrespect for society and permissiveness.

Frequent mass fights involving visitors in Moscow were recorded in the summer of 2021. The mayor of the city, Sergei Sobyanin, said that the authorities have tightened control over migrants, criminal cases have been opened, and hundreds of people have been deported.

In March, Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev reported that the number of migrants deported from Russia in 2022 had more than doubled. He did not give an exact number. According to FinExpertiz, 3.47 million foreign citizens came to work in Russia last year (most from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan), which is a third more than in 2021.
