Irritable bowel syndrome can lead to problematic symptoms such as abdominal pain, cramps, bloating, and diarrhea, but certain foods and drinks can trigger symptoms. Gastroenterologist Alexandra Alisova told MedikForum about this.

Some people may experience constipation, back pain, fatigue, nausea, flatulence, and whitish mucus in their stools, she says. Although food triggers are different for everyone, there are certain “culprits” for many.

“Eating and drinking triggers for people with IBS vary from one person to another. That’s why it’s helpful to keep a food diary where you can keep track of what you’ve been eating and drinking along with your symptoms,” she said.

However, the “main culprits” include cabbage, broccoli, and apples. Cruciferous vegetables (eg, broccoli, Brussels sprouts) can cause symptoms of IBS.

What’s more, the same can be said for “high fructose fruits” like apples, mangoes, and pears. Fatty and fried foods such as chips and cheese can also trigger IBS symptoms, as can highly processed foods and legumes.

“Caffeinated drinks, such as tea, coffee and some energy drinks, as well as carbonated drinks, can also cause IBS symptoms,” the expert noted.

There are also other triggers for IBS, such as anxiety, stress, antibiotics, antidepressants, cough syrup, chewing gum.
