Amendments to the Criminal Code have been submitted to the State Duma to toughen penalties for high treason and international terrorism. Vasily Piskarev, head of the Duma Committee on Security and Anti-Corruption, spoke about this on his Telegram channel.
Thus, under article 205 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Terrorist act”), it is proposed to increase the maximum term for committing a crime to twenty years in prison (now it is 15 years).
Under Article 205.1 (“Assistance to terrorist activities”), the minimum threshold for recruiting or engaging in terrorist crimes can be raised to seven years (now from 5 to 15 years). The minimum punishment for aiding and abetting is from 10 to 12 years (the maximum term under this article is up to 20 years);
Under Article 205.4 (“Organization of a terrorist community and participation in it”), members of terrorist communities will face from 10 to 15 years in prison (valid from 5 to 10 years);
Under Article 281 (“Sabotage”), it was proposed to toughen the punishment to twenty years in prison (now 15 years);
Under Article 361 (“Act of International Terrorism”), the punishment can increase from 12 years to life (now from 10 years).
A number of other articles of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation are also being specified, Piskarev added.
According to him, it is also proposed to establish life imprisonment for high treason.
