According to the expert, the reason may be the desire to explore new territories, stress or “sexual hunting”. In particular, when the front door opens, a lot of unknown smells enter the apartment. Most of them are of interest to pets: cats love to explore new territory and look for objects for hunting.
In addition, a cat may rush out of the house if it is uncomfortable in the house: for example, a new pet has appeared or it is treated badly. Then she will seek to find a more peaceful and safe place. And finally, during the period of sexual hunting, cats also tend to leave their territory in the hope of finding a mate.
The veterinarian emphasized that it is important to understand whether the animal’s stress is the cause of escape attempts – and to exclude stress factors. In addition, it is recommended that animals living at home that do not have breeding value be sterilized: this will make life easier for both them and their owners. The specialist recalled that the street is dangerous for an animal that is not used to it, and the pet’s escape can lead to its death.
