Canada is trying to identify locations on the border with the United States to install an early warning radar station that will help protect North American cities from threats from the north. It is reported by Interfax with reference to Defense news.
“The so-called Arctic Over-the-Horizon Radar Station will be located in southern Ontario, and it will provide the ability to detect threats approaching Alaska at long range,” the publication informs.
These plans were announced by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on March 24 during a visit to Ottawa by US President Joe Biden. The project is worth $743 million and aims to monitor possible threats to major population centers in North America.
The deployment of this system will require the installation of its receivers and transmitters at four locations in Ontario. The system is expected to reach initial operational readiness in 2028 and full operational readiness in 2031.
At the same time, Defense news emphasizes, in this case we are talking about only one of the four elements of Canada’s program to strengthen the defense of its northern borders.
Its second component is the creation of another over-the-horizon radar station, but in the region of Northern Canada. The third component is the Crossbow project to deploy a secret network of detection devices in northern Canada; it is due to enter service in 2029-2030.
The fourth component is the launch of new tracking satellites and other space objects related to reconnaissance. In particular, Ottawa wants to put into orbit a radar that will provide detailed radar images of the Earth’s surface, regardless of meteorological conditions and the level of natural light in the area; as well as an automatic system for tracking the situation on the seas. However, according to the Canadian government, these satellite systems will not be operational until 2035 at the earliest.
