The State Electoral Commission of Montenegro has published the final results of the second round of presidential elections, according to which former Minister of Economic Development Yakov Milatovic won with 58.88% of the vote. It is reported by TASS.

“The State Electoral Commission approves the results of the presidential elections in Montenegro. Candidate Yakov Milatovic was elected as President of Montenegro with 222,592 votes, i.e. 58.88% of the total votes,” the GEC said in a statement.

Outgoing President Milo Djukanovic received 41.12%, or 154,769 votes, according to the GEC.

The second round of presidential elections in Montenegro took place on 2 April. More than 542 thousand people had the right to vote, the turnout was 70.7%.

The President of Montenegro is elected by popular vote for a five-year term and may hold office for no more than two consecutive terms. According to the constitution, Montenegro is a parliamentary republic, and the head of state performs mainly representative functions. Nevertheless, the figure of the president is of great importance in the formation of the cabinet of ministers and the nomination of the prime minister.
