Guillermo Lasso’s political situation was complicated even before he became president.
As a reminder, on February 7, 2021, the first screenshot of the TV news put him in third place, behind Andrés Arauz and Yaku Pérez, that is, outside the second election round.
Without the help of PSC election control, to count the votes that brought him to the second round, and then, under the political pressure of his ally in the CNE to defend that right, the presidency would be in the hands of UNES or PK today.
On May 14, 2021, he decided to break with the PSC, which, according to reliable sources, consolidated a majority that exceeded 100 votes, opting instead for another 72 votes with PK and ID, and with Guadalupe Llori at the helm, most of which would last a very short time.
State management, in addition to leadership, administrative ability (…), requires great political management.
Since then, the opposition led by UNES, the PSC and the extreme PK faction (Leonidas Iza) has added more supporters, some claiming they have broken promises and others fleeing the accelerated official election campaign, the consequences of the unpopular tax reform and the failure to control the uncertainty that has skyrocketed to unprecedented levels.
So we come to June 2022, when in the midst of mass protests and strikes promoted by trade unions and anarchist groups across the country, the majority of the opposition in the National Assembly, using the power provided by the Constitution, tried to remove him. Again the PSC saved the president by not joining the movement.
After that, the struggles for the election of the bank chief executive, control over the CPCCS and the Judicial Council further strained the relationship between the executive and the legislature, with accusations and qualifications so serious that they already left very little room for subsequent agreements or even a truce.
In the meantime, despite the continuing decline in the popularity of the free-falling government and warnings from various sectors, she insisted on calling a referendum, which, far from the political oxygen she was looking for, became another ballast to the already suffocating political situation.
The icing on the cake was the Encuentro case, denounced by La Posta, which, along with the ongoing tax investigation, motivated the impeachment trial recently qualified by the Constitutional Court, which could lead to a presidential succession in the short term. ; especially if on this occasion the eternal savior (PSC) has already announced that he will vote for the removal of the president.
State management, in addition to leadership, administrative capacity and experience in public service, also requires great political management.
What has been published shows the serious shortcomings of the Government’s political management. Not only because of the president’s inexperience, understandably, from the private sector, but also because he did not surround himself with an experienced and successful environment that leads politics.
Today he has a new prime minister, with the highest references in his government. Unfortunately, it appears to be too late.
We will continue to comment in this column. (OR)
