The Russian Foreign Ministry said that Russia would take retaliatory measures in connection with Finland’s entry into NATO. It is reported by Interfax.
It is noted that specific steps will depend on the conditions for the country’s integration into the alliance.
“The Russian Federation will be forced to take retaliatory measures, both of a military-technical and other nature, in order to stop the threats to our national security arising from Finland’s entry into NATO,” the ministry said in a statement.
“Concrete steps in defense construction on the northwestern borders of Russia will depend on the specific conditions for the integration of this country into the North Atlantic Alliance, including the deployment of NATO military infrastructure and strike weapons systems on its territory,” the Smolenskaya Square noted.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said earlier on Tuesday that the alliance would not deploy troops from other member countries in Finland without the consent of Helsinki.
“It will be Finland’s decision … There will be no NATO troops in Finland without her consent,” he said before the ceremony for Finland to join the alliance.
“Like in the case of many other countries, we have military exercises, we have a naval and air presence, but we do not have permanent bases on their territory. And the issue of such bases will not yet be discussed in our negotiations with Finland,” he added.
Finland formally completed its accession to NATO on 4 April.
