Warner Bros. Discovery is close to an agreement to create an online series based on the Harry Potter books. According to RBC, this was reported by Bloomberg, citing two sources familiar with the situation.
Each of the seven books will be based on a season.
CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery’s David Zaslav and HBO head Casey Bloys are working on a deal with writer JK Rowling, but it has yet to be finalized, the agency said.
Rowling will be involved in creating the series to make sure it lives up to her books, but won’t be on set daily as the main creator, sources say.
Warner Bros. Discovery hopes the series will kick-start a new streaming strategy. Its key principle will be the creation of new content based on stories and characters already familiar to viewers. As part of the strategy, HBO Max will be renamed simply Max.
The fact that HBO Max is discussing the possibility of creating a series based on the Harry Potter universe, sources from The Hollywood Reporter and Variety reported in January 2021. At that time, discussions were at an early stage.
