North Korea is demanding that the United States extradite members of the anti-Pyongyang Free Joseon group accused of attacking the North Korean embassy in Madrid in 2019. It is reported by Interfax with reference to the TsTAK.
“The United States should formally apologize for the incident of the attack on the DPRK embassy in Spain and pay damages, as well as arrest and immediately hand over all the criminals involved in the incident,” the embassy said in a statement.
“As for Christopher Ahn, he is a criminal who deserves severe punishment. He, along with members of an anti-Republican conspiracy organization, attacked the sacred and inviolable state diplomatic mission and caused serious spiritual, physical and material harm to diplomats and their families, ”the statement says.
Christopher Ahn is a Korean-American former marine who is accused of breaking into the North Korean diplomatic mission in Madrid in February 2019, beating embassy staff, and stealing laptops and documents along with other members of the anti-Pyongyang group Free Joseon.
An was arrested in Los Angeles in April 2019 but was released on $1.3 million bail.
Last May, a US federal judge ruled that Ahn should be extradited to Spain to stand trial. The suspect filed a motion to stop his extradition, stating that his life could be in danger.
“The US assertion that diplomats of hostile countries are deprived of exclusive diplomatic rights and privileges is a gangster violation of international law,” the diplomatic mission stressed.
The United States “openly patronizes and facilitates terrorist attacks against our citizens,” it added.
On February 22, 2019, a group of unknown people broke into the DPRK embassy in Madrid. They tied up the employees, ransacked the area, and fled with computers and documents about four hours later.
