The Italian government has approved a bill to ban synthetic foods, including artificial meat. According to Gismeteo, if the document is finally adopted, exporters and importers of such products can be further held liable: from a fine of several tens of thousands of euros to the closure of enterprises.
According to the head of the Italian Ministry of Health, Orazio Schilacci, this measure is based on the “precautionary principle”. The official clarified that there are still no scientific studies on the effects of synthesized food on the body, and the task of the state in this situation is to protect the national heritage and the agricultural industry based on the Mediterranean diet.
Francesco Lollobrigida, head of the country’s Ministry of Agriculture, added that the authorities are concerned about the safety of Italy’s cultural characteristics, including the tradition of drinking wine and specific natural products. Synthesized food can cause irreparable harm to this property.
