The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC), the organizer of Wimbledon, plans to allow Russian and Belarusian tennis players to compete this season. It is reported by RBC with reference to the AELTC statement.
“For the time being, we intend to accept entries from Russian and Belarusian players, provided that they act as “neutral” athletes and comply with the relevant conditions,” the statement said.
Among these conditions is a ban on expressing support for a special operation in Ukraine. Players receiving state funding from Russia and/or Belarus (including sponsorship from companies under the control or control of these states) will also not be admitted to this Grand Slam tournament.
Last year, the AELTC barred Russians and Belarusians from the tournament, calling its decision “a contribution to the broader effort of the UK government, business, sports and the arts to limit Russia’s global influence.”
The ATP and WTA stripped Wimbledon of ranking points for this, and also fined AELTC and the UK Lawn Tennis Association. In the event of a second ban, the competition could face exclusion from the ATP tour.
