Former US President Donald Trump faces more than 30 charges, including those related to business fraud. It is reported by Interfax with reference to the CNN channel.
Earlier, American media reported that in New York, a jury voted to indict Trump in the “Stormy Daniels case.”
In January 2018, The Wall Street Journal published an article alleging that in 2006, Trump was allegedly in a relationship with actress Stormy Daniels, and shortly before the 2016 presidential election, he paid her $130,000 to keep quiet. Trump himself assured that he had no personal relationship with Daniels.
From media publications, it became known that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg demanded the appearance of the former head of the White House to testify on the merits of the charges against him.
CNN released a statement from Bragg’s spokesman saying the prosecutor’s office contacted Trump’s attorney to “arrange for him to appear” in court for arraignment.
Former President Donald Trump is expected to appear in court on Tuesday. Judge Juan Mercan will preside, the TV channel said, citing multiple sources.
A number of prominent Republicans opposed the trial of the 45th US president and accused the Manhattan District Attorney of exceeding his powers for political reasons.
At the same time, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer released a statement saying that “Trump should be subject to the same laws as every American.”
According to him, Trump’s fate should be decided “by the legal system and by jury, not by politics.”
“There should be no outside political influence, intimidation or interference in this matter. I call on Mr Trump’s critics and supporters alike to allow the process to proceed peacefully and in accordance with the law,” Schumer said.
