As a result of the conflict in Ukraine, many energy companies are facing a whopping $200 billion in windfall profits, Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko said in an interview with Politico.
According to Galushchenko, such companies could help restore Ukrainian infrastructure, as revenues have risen due to the hostilities. “I think it would be fair to share this money with Ukraine. I mean, to help us restore and rebuild the energy sector,” the minister stressed.
At the same time, Galushchenko noted that the Lithuanian company Ignitis Group is already going to send about 10% of its profits to help restore Ukraine, and invited larger companies to follow its example.
In addition, the minister called for the closing of loopholes to circumvent international sanctions against energy resources from Russia and said that Kiev could export an alternative – nuclear fuel, so that some European countries could “get rid of energy dependence on Moscow.”
