The US administration plans to allocate $9.5 billion to support democracy in the world in fiscal years 2022-2024, according to the White House website.
“In fiscal years 2022, 2023, and 2024, the United States has invested and intends to invest approximately $9.5 billion <…> to support democracy, human rights and good governance around the world,” the statement said, released during the “Summit for Democracy,” which began in the United States on March 28 and runs through March 30.
The summit is attended by 120 leaders of countries. The meetings discuss the conflict in Ukraine, the fight against corruption, cooperation to promote democracy, the status of women and other issues. The United States held its first “Democracy Summit” in December 2021, the current event being the second.
US President Joe Biden, speaking at the opening of the summit, said that the United States will provide $ 690 million to support independent media, as well as free and fair elections around the world within two years. Biden also noted that the world’s democracies, from his point of view, have become “stronger”, and “autocracies” – on the contrary, but democracy “needs to be constantly defended.”
