The United States will not be able to do anything to stop China’s nuclear program in the next 10 to 20 years, Mark Milley, head of the Pentagon’s joint chiefs of staff, said at a congressional hearing.
“We probably won’t be able to do anything to stop, slow down, disrupt, impede or destroy the Chinese nuclear development program that they have planned for the next 10 to 20 years,” CNN quoted him as saying. Milley added that China intends to proceed with the nuclear program according to its own plan, and the US has “very little leverage” it can use to prevent this.
The head of the US General Staff also clarified that China’s nuclear potential “does not match” the US nuclear potential, but at the same time it is “significant”. According to him, the PRC and the Russian Federation have “means that threaten American interests and the way of life,” and this is the first time that the United States “faces two major nuclear powers.”
Milley also noted that Iran could “produce enough fissile material for a nuclear weapon in less than two weeks” and eventually develop a nuclear weapon within “several months after that.” “The US military has developed many options for our national leadership to consider if or when Iran decides to develop a nuclear weapon,” he assured.
