The Vietnamese government approved a proposal to increase the period during which citizens of 25 countries, including the Russian Federation, will be able to stay in the country without a visa, from 15 to 45 days. According to TASS with reference to the portal Việt Nam News, now this issue will be submitted to the Parliament in May.
In addition, the majority of members of the Cabinet, as noted, supported the proposal to extend the validity of electronic tourist visas from 30 to 90 days, which can be obtained by citizens of 80 countries, including Russia.
The Vietnamese authorities are planning to ease entry requirements to support the development of the tourism industry and increase the number of tourists visiting the country.
Vietnam reopened its borders after the pandemic to foreign travelers last March, much earlier than other countries in the region. The local tourism sector has begun to gradually recover, but so far the results are much more modest than expected, as industry experts say Vietnam’s current visa policy is considered less friendly than in other Southeast Asian countries.
The number of foreign tourists who visited Vietnam last year was 3.6 million, just 70% of the target of 5 million. This year, the country has set a goal to receive at least 8 million foreign guests. The republic expects to earn about 650 trillion dong (about $27.5 billion) from the sale of tourism services in 2023.
